All shipments destined for the Canary Islands are subject to control by the Canary Tax Agency (ATC) and the Customs service.

Although the Canary Islands are part of Spain, it has a special tax regime, so shipments from the Peninsula, the Balearic Islands or other countries must pass clearance customs.

Tariffs and Taxes

  • Packages with a value less than €150:
    • They are exempt from ordinary tariffs. However, since July 1, 2026, shipments from outside the EU pay a tariff of €3 for each type of product.
    • Low-value shipments processed using the simplified H7 declaration are usually exempt from IGIC (except alcohol, perfumery, tobacco or merchandise subject to AIEM). When applicable, the IGIC is applied according to the category of the product (general rate 7%, which may be 3%, 0% or higher depending on the good).

Packages coming from the Peninsula or European Union

Even if the shipment comes from mainland Spain or the EU:

  • There is customs control.
  • VAT is not paid peninsular; IGIC is applied at destination.
  • If the seller applied VAT in error, an invoice without VAT can be requested for export to the Canary Islands.

The Canary Islands are within the customs territory of the EU, but outside the VAT tax territory.

Certain products are prohibited by customs, health or transport regulations.

Prohibited Items

  • Explosives and flammable materials: fuels, fireworks, gases, pressurized aerosols.
  • Dangerous or toxic chemicals.
  • Illegal drugs and controlled substances without authorization.
  • Regulated weapons, ammunition and components.
  • Counterfeit products.

Do I need to declare the contents and value of the package?

Yes. All shipments destined for the Canary Islands require a precise declaration of the content and real value of the merchandise.

Content declaration

Must indicate:

  • Type of product
  • Quantity
  • Use (personal or commercial)

Generic descriptions such as “gift”, “clothing” or “accessories” may generate customs withholdings.

Declared value

It is mandatory to declare the actual purchase value:

  • Underdeclaring can cause fines, blocks or tax recalculations.
  • Overdeclaring can increase the IGIC and other associated costs.

Calculating taxes in the Canary Islands. (IGIC and, if applicable, tariffs) is based on the value of the merchandise plus transportation and insurance.

A correct declaration avoids delays and facilitates customs clearance of the shipment.

What happens if my package contains restricted items?

Restricted items can be shipped to the Canary Islands, but require specific permits or compliance with additional regulations. Some examples:

  • Medicines: They may require a medical prescription or authorization from the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS).
  • Food and beverages: They may require health certification and be subject to inspection.
  • Electronic devices and telecommunications: They must comply with the applicable European regulations (CE marking) and, in some cases, specific technical requirements.

If the shipment contains restricted items without proper documentation, it may be detained by customs, generate additional requirements or be returned to the sender.

What additional costs can I expect when sending a package to the Canary Islands?

In addition to the cost of transportation, shipments to the Canary Islands may generate expenses associated with customs clearance and the special tax regime of the archipelago.

IGIC

The Canarian Indirect General Tax (IGIC) is applied depending on the category of the product (general rate 7%, which may vary).
It is calculated on the value of the merchandise plus transportation and insurance, if applies.

Tariffs

If the value exceeds €150, tariffs may apply according to the tariff classification of the product. For shipments from outside the EU with a value equal to or less than €150, from July 1, 2026, a tariff of €3 is applied for each type of product.

Customs management costs

The carrier may charge fees for the processing of the DUA (Single Administrative Document) and the management of the clearance.

Inspections or controls specials

Certain products (food, healthcare, technological) may generate additional costs if they require specific inspection or documentation.

To avoid unforeseen costs, it is advisable to correctly declare the contents and real value of the shipment from the beginning.

How long does it take for a package to arrive in the Canary Islands?

Delivery time varies depending on the origin and type of shipment:

  • From the EU: 2 to 5 business days.
  • From outside the EU: 3 to 10 business days (depending on the carrier and customs processes).

Express shipments can arrive in 24-48 hours, but times may be extended if the package is detained by customs.

What should I do if my package is detained at customs?

If customs detains your package, you will receive a notification with the steps to follow. You can:

  • Contact the courier company to verify the status of the shipment.
  • Submit the additional documentation they request (invoice, proof of payment, permits, etc.).
  • Pay the duties and taxes to release the package.

If the package does not comply with the regulations, it may be returned or confiscated.

How can I track my package?

Once shipped, you will receive a tracking number that you can enter on the carrier's website (DHL, FedEx, UPS, Correos, etc.). If the package is in customs, tracking will indicate that it is in the process of customs clearance.

What documents do I need to send a package to the Canary Islands?

Basic documents include:

  • Commercial invoice or declaration of contents (to indicate the value and description of the items).
  • Shipping labels provided by the carrier.
  • Additional documents if the package contains restricted items.

Can I send gifts to the Canary Islands and how should I declare them?

Yes, you can send gifts to the Canary Islands, but they must be declared correctly:

  • If they come from the EU: They do not pay tariffs, but may be subject to IGIC at the time of importation into the Canary Islands.
  • If they come from outside the EU: They are exempt from taxes if their value is less than €45. For higher values, IGIC and, where applicable, tariffs will be applied. In addition, from July 1, 2026, shipments from outside the EU with a value equal to or less than €150 will pay a tariff of €3 for each type of product.

How to handle customs procedures in the Canary Islands?

To manage customs efficiently:

  • Ensure that the package has an accurate declaration of value and contents.
  • Pay taxes and duties if necessary.
  • Respond quickly to any requests for additional documentation from customs.
  • Use a carrier that offers simplified customs clearance.

If you need assistance, our team can help you with the documentation and tracking of your shipment.

Is shipping to the Canary Islands from the Peninsula or Europe “like exporting”? Because?

Yes. Although the Canary Islands are part of the EU customs territory, they do not belong to the VAT application territory. For this reason, a shipment from the Peninsula/EU to the Canary Islands is treated, for tax and paperwork purposes, as a departure to a special tax territory (export) and an import into the Canary Islands where IGIC (and, if applicable, AIEM) is settled. The AEAT itself indicates that the export regime applies when the merchandise leaves for special tax territories —including the Peninsula → Canary Islands exit—; and remember that the Canary Islands are outside the EU VAT.

What taxes may apply when arriving in the Canary Islands (IGIC and AIEM)?

    • IGIC: Local tax that replaces VAT in the Canary Islands. In low-value shipments processed by H7, the import may be exempt from IGIC if the conditions of the simplified procedure are met.
    • AIEM: Tax applicable to certain products to protect local production (e.g., certain foods, beverages, perfumery, etc.). If a shipment is subject to AIEM, it cannot go through H7 even if its value is ≤ €150.

Do you ship to all the Canary Islands?

Yes. We ship to all the islands of the archipelago: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa.

Coverage includes home delivery or, depending on the carrier, at the collection point.

Deadlines may vary slightly on non-capital islands, but we operate with complete coverage throughout the Canary Islands.
