Yes, always. The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) matches the invoice against the contents and knows market prices. Declare the real purchase value: obvious undervaluation means retention and penalties that cost more than the tax. We prepare the declaration for you from your invoice.
Weapons and self-defence gear (pepper spray, tasers, spear guns) need a Firearms Licensing Authority licence; food, plants and meats need an agriculture certificate; medicines need Ministry of Health clearance. The parcel waits until the permit shows up. If the permit never arrives, or the item is outright prohibited, it gets seized. That is why it pays to ask us BEFORE buying any regulated product: we will tell you which paper it needs and how to get it.
If your purchase is US$100 FOB or less, it enters free of duty and GCT. Above that: Import Duty (0-40% by product) + 15% GCT on CIF plus duty + two minor fees (0.5% Environmental Levy, 0.3% SCF). Don\'t panic: most holds are about paperwork, not violations. The courier notifies you of the reason; it is almost always solved by providing the purchase invoice, the prescription or the missing permit. Write to us with your tracking number and we will manage the case with you until release.
Every shipment includes a tracking number. Follow it on the carrier\'s site or straight from your MDE dashboard, stage by stage: departure from our warehouse, transit, customs clearance and delivery in Jamaica.
For normal purchases, just the invoice or receipt with the real value: we prepare the rest of the export paperwork and the declaration. Add the sanitary certificate for food or plants, and the prescription with medicines.
Yes. Gifts are declared like any shipment, at their real value. Jamaica has no special gift exemption, but the general US$100 FOB de minimis applies: a gift under that value arrives tax-free. Mark it as "gift" and keep the receipt.
US$100 on the FOB value. Below that threshold you pay no taxes; above it, the charge is calculated on the full CIF value (goods + insurance + freight).
Often yes: the de minimis is PER SHIPMENT. Two US$95 shipments enter completely free; one US$190 shipment is taxed in full (~39% effective). Your MDE locker lets you separate purchases and trigger shipments however suits you best; run the numbers in the quoting tool first.
Two minor fees Jamaica adds to taxed shipments: the Environmental Levy (0.5% of CIF) and the Standard Compliance Fee (0.3%, from the standards bureau). They are small but they show up in the breakdown; our quoting tool already includes them so there are no surprises.
