There are certain items that cannot be shipped to Ireland under any circumstances. These include:

    • Hazardous Materials: Explosives, flammables, poisons and dangerous chemicals.
    • Illegal Drugs and Controlled Substances: Includes narcotics, marijuana and derivatives, as well as medications without a prescription or authorization from the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA).
    • Arms and Ammunition: Including replicas, military knives, firearm parts and devices considered unauthorized personal defence.
    • Pornographic Material: Any content considered obscene or pornographic under Irish law and EU regulations. European.
    • Protected Fauna and Flora: Live animals, plants, seeds and endangered species without permits from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and/or CITES.

    Restricted Items:
These items can be shipped to Ireland, but require special permits or must comply with certain regulations:

    • Medicines: Require a valid medical prescription and, in some cases, import authorization issued by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA).
    • Food and Beverages: Are subject to sanitary and phytosanitary inspection by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). Products of animal origin, dairy and meat have greater restrictions.
    • Cosmetics and Hygiene Products: They must comply with Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 of the European Union and the labeling standards required by the HPRA.
    • Cultural Materials: Old books, works of Art, historical or archaeological documents require authorization from the Revenue Commissioners – Customs Division or the National Museum of Ireland, as appropriate.

    Declaration of Contents and Value

    • Precise Description: The sender must detail the items in the package, including quantities, brand and type of product.

Have no fear, our team of experts is here to assist you at all times.

Customs procedures

  • Parcel Review: All packages entering Ireland are reviewed by the Revenue Commissioners – Customs Division, the authority responsible for customs and import control, to guarantee compliance with the national and international regulations of the Union European.

Tariffs and Taxes: Parcels with a declared value of less than 150 euros (de minimis limit established by the EU) are exempt from import duties, but not VAT.
Any shipment from outside the European Union is subject to Irish VAT of 23%, calculated on the total value of the merchandise (product + transportation + insurance, if applicable).
For shipments with a value greater than 150 euros, import tariffs will also be applied, determined according to the TARIC tariff code of the product and its declared value.

Packages from the European Union and other countries: Shipping from countries within the European Union (such as Spain, France or Germany) are not subject to tariffs or import taxes, since Ireland is part of the European single market.
On the other hand, packages coming from non-EU countries (such as the United Kingdom, the United States, China or Switzerland) are subject to VAT and, in some cases, tariffs depending on the nature of the product.
Ireland does not apply the DR-CAFTA agreement; is governed by the trade agreements of the European Union, which may offer tariff reductions depending on the country of origin.

Packages from the United Kingdom (UK): Since the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Brexit), all shipments from England, Scotland and Wales are considered non-EU imports. This means that they are subject to 23% VAT and, in some cases, import tariffs, depending on the type of product and its value.
Ships from Northern Ireland, however, remain under the rules of the European single market thanks to the Northern Ireland Protocol, so they do not pay tariffs or require additional customs clearance.
For packages sent from the rest of the United Kingdom, the buyer or recipient in Ireland must complete the customs declaration and pay the corresponding taxes before the release of the package. Some couriers, such as An Post, DHL or UPS, offer the possibility of automatically managing this process through the Revenue Commissioners system.

    Payment of Duties:
The recipient in Ireland is responsible for paying the corresponding duties and taxes before the package is released. Payment can be managed directly through the international courier (DHL, UPS, FedEx, An Post) or through the Revenue Commissioners portal. Additional Documentation: Some products require special permits or certifications: Food and beverages: Health certificates issued by the Department of agriculture, food and the marine (DAFM). flora: Permits from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and/or CITES.

Release Procedures: Once the duties are paid and the required documentation is submitted, the Revenue Commissioners – Customs Division will release the package and it will be delivered to the recipient by An Post (service Irish postal) or by the corresponding courier.

Package Tracking: You can track your shipment at all times using the tracking number provided by the international carrier, or through the An Post system, or from your control panel in My European Address, once the package enters the Irish customs system.

Possible Delays: If the package requires additional documentation, health inspection or contains restricted items, customs procedures may cause delays in delivery. This is especially common in non-EU shipments or during periods of high customs traffic.

We help complete all your customs documentation to avoid possible inconveniences!

Frequently asked questions about shipping to Ireland

What items cannot be shipped to Ireland?

It is not permitted to send explosives, flammable materials, illegal drugs, weapons or ammunition (including replicas), pornographic material, as well as protected fauna and flora without permits from MINAE. Perishable foods, dangerous chemicals and unauthorized medications are also restricted.

Do I need to declare the contents and value of the package?

Yes. All shipments to Ireland must include a detailed description of their contents, indicating type of product, quantity, brand and actual value. Declaring a lower or incorrect value may result in withholdings or penalties from the Revenue Commissioners – Customs Division.

What happens if my package contains restricted items?

If your package contains restricted items, Irish customs may request additional documentation or permits before releasing it. For example, food products require certification from the DAFM, medicines authorization from the HPRA, and electronic devices compliance with the ComReg. If the required documentation is not delivered, the package may be detained or returned to the country of origin.

What additional costs can I expect when sending a package to Ireland?

In addition to the shipping cost, import duties and Irish VAT (23%) may apply, calculated on the total value of the merchandise (product + transportation + insurance). If the value of the package is less than 150 euros, it will be exempt from tariffs, but not from VAT.

Packages sent from countries within the European Union (such as Spain, France, Germany or Portugal) are not subject to tariffs or import taxes, as they circulate freely within the European single market. In these cases, only minimal administrative costs may be generated by the courier or the postal service An Post due to handling or internal management.

On the other hand, shipments from outside the European Union, including United Kingdom (UK), are subject to full customs control, the payment of 23% VAT and, in some cases, to import tariffs depending on the type of product and its origin.
Since January 1, 2021, after the departure of the United Kingdom from the European single market, all packages coming from the UK are treated as non-EU imports, even if the seller or sender is located in Northern Ireland (except goods sent under the Northern Ireland Protocol, which follow applying EU rules).

In practice:

  • Commercial shipments from England, Scotland or Wales pay VAT and import taxes upon entering Ireland.
  • Private or personal shipments may also be subject to VAT if the value exceeds 45 euros, even if declared as gift.
  • Businesses with VAT registration in Ireland or using the IOSS (Import One Stop Shop) system can simplify the payment of VAT, avoiding delays at customs.

In addition, additional administrative fees may apply for customs clearance or document management, charged by the courier or the Revenue Commissioners – Customs Division.

How long does it take for a package to arrive in Ireland?

The average delivery time is 7 to 15 business days, depending on the country of origin and the type of shipment. Packages coming from outside the European Union may take longer due to customs and health control.

What should I do if my package is detained at customs?

If your package is detained, the Revenue Commissioners or the courier will notify you. You must present the commercial invoice, identification document and, if applicable, the required certificates or permits. Once the process is completed and the taxes paid, the package will be released for delivery.

How can I track my package?

You can track your shipment using the tracking number provided by the international carrier. When the package enters Ireland, you can continue tracking it through the An Post platform or from your control panel in MDE.

What documents do I need to send a package to Ireland?

A commercial invoice or proof of purchase, a declaration of content and value, and in some cases health or import certificates issued by the DAFM, HPRA or ComReg are required, depending on the type of product.

Can I send gifts to Ireland and how should I declare them?

Yes. You can send gifts by declaring “gift” in the documentation and specifying the contents and their actual estimated value. Even if they are gifts, VAT may be applied if the value exceeds 45 euros or if the package comes from outside the European Union.

How to handle customs procedures in Ireland?

Customs procedures are managed by the Revenue Commissioners – Customs Division. The recipient must present the corresponding documentation, pay any applicable taxes or duties, and comply with any applicable health or technical regulations. Once the process is completed, the package is released and delivered to the recipient by An Post or by the assigned courier.

Does the new €3 EU tariff affect me when shipping to Ireland?

Yes, when the shipment comes from outside the European Union (for example the United States, China or the United Kingdom) and its value is equal to or less than €150. From July 1, 2026, Regulation (EU) 2026/382 replaces the former tariff exemption for low-value shipments with a fixed tariff of €3 for each type of product (tariff heading), not per package. It is a transitional measure until July 1, 2028. Your purchases within the EU destined for Ireland do not pay this tariff. At MDE we prepare the customs documentation and the quote shows you the real cost before shipping, without surprises.
