  • Prohibited Items:
    There are certain items that cannot be shipped to Denmark under any circumstances. These include:

    • Hazardous Materials: Explosives, flammables, poisons, pressurized gases, undeclared aerosols and hazardous chemicals.

    • Illegal Drugs and Controlled Substances: Includes narcotics, marijuana, cannabis derivatives, psychotropics and medications without a medical prescription or without authorization from the Lægemiddelstyrelsen (Danish Medicines Agency)..

    • Weapons and Ammunition: Including replicas, combat knives, firearm parts, air pistols and personal defense devices (such as pepper spray) not authorized by the Politi (Danish Police Authority).

    • Pornographic Material: Any content considered obscene or pornographic, especially that involving minors or that is illegal under the Danish Penal Code and the regulations of the European Union.

    • Protected Fauna and Flora: Live animals, plants, seeds and endangered species without permits from Miljøstyrelsen (Danish Environmental Protection Agency) and/or CITES.

    Restricted Items:
    These items can be shipped to Denmark, but require special permits or must comply with certain regulations:

    • Medicines: Require a valid medical prescription and, in some cases, import authorization issued by the Lægemiddelstyrelsen.

    • Food and Drinks: They are subject to health inspection and phytosanitary controls by the Fødevarestyrelsen (Danish Veterinary and Food Authority). Products of animal origin, dairy, meat and eggs have greater restrictions.

    • Cosmetics and Hygiene Products: They must comply with Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 and local health regulations supervised by the Miljøstyrelsen.

    Declaration of Content and Value

    • Accurate Description: The sender must detail the items in the package, including quantity, brand, model and type of product. Generic descriptions (such as “clothing” or “accessories”) may cause delays at customs.

    • Declared Value: The actual value of the merchandise must be declared. Declaring a lower value may result in fines, withholding or confiscation by the Toldstyrelsen (Danish Customs Directorate), while declaring a higher value may increase taxes or duties. You decide the declared value of your goods.

Customs procedures

  • Package Review: All packages entering Denmark are reviewed by the Toldstyrelsen (Danish Directorate General of Customs), the authority responsible for ensuring compliance with national and European Union regulations regarding import, security, tax and environmental control. Inspections are carried out randomly or when products belong to sensitive categories (such as food, cosmetics or electronics).

    Tariffs and Taxes: Packages with a declared value of less than 150 euros (the “de minimis” limit of the European Union) are exempt from import duties, but not from VAT.
    All shipments from outside the European Union are subject to Danish VAT (moms), which is 25% for most products.
    For shipments with a value greater than 150 euros, import tariffs will also apply, calculated according to the TARIC classification and the value declared on the commercial invoice.

    Packages from the European Union and other countries: Shipping from countries within the European Union (such as Spain, France or Germany) are not subject to tariffs or import taxes, since Denmark is part of the European single market.
    On the other hand, packages from non-EU countries (such as the United Kingdom, the United States, China, Switzerland or Norway) They are subject to Danish VAT (25%) and, in some cases, additional customs duties, depending on the type of product and its value.
    Denmark does not apply DR-CAFTA; It is governed by the trade agreements established by the European Union, which can reduce or eliminate tariffs depending on the origin and nature of the product.

    Payment of Tariffs: The recipient in Denmark is responsible for paying customs taxes and duties prior to the release of the package. This payment can be made directly to the international courier (DHL, UPS, FedEx, PostNord) or through the Toldstyrelsen online portal.
    In some cases, the courier can handle the payment and customs declaration on behalf of the customer for an additional administrative fee.

    • Food and beverages: Health certificates issued or approved by the Fødevarestyrelsen (Danish Food and Veterinary Authority).

    • Medicines and cosmetics: Registration or health authorization from the Lægemiddelstyrelsen (Danish Medicines Agency).

    • Electronic devices and telecommunications: CE certification in accordance with European standards and supervised by the Styrelsen for Dataforsyning og Infrastruktur (Danish Communications and Technology Agency).

    Release Procedures: Once the fees are paid and the required documentation is delivered, the Toldstyrelsen will authorize the release of the package, which will be delivered to the recipient by PostNord (Danish postal service) or by the corresponding international courier.
    If irregularities or missing documentation are detected, the package may be temporarily held for review or return.

    Package Tracking: You can track your shipment at all times using the tracking number provided by the international carrier or from the PostNord system. You can also do this from your control panel in My European Address, once the package has entered the Danish customs system.

    Possible Delays: If the package requires additional documentation, health verification or contains restricted items, customs procedures may generate delays in delivery. This occurs more frequently in shipments outside the European Union or during periods of high logistical load (such as Christmas campaigns or seasonal sales).

What items cannot be shipped to Denmark?

You cannot send items prohibited by Belgian law or by the regulations of the European Union. This includes illegal drugs, explosive or flammable materials, weapons and ammunition (including replicas), dangerous chemicals, cash, pornographic materials, counterfeit products, and fauna or flora protected without permits from SPF Santé Publique or CITES.

Do I need to declare the contents and value of the package?

Yes. All shipments to Denmark must include an accurate description of their contents (type of product, quantity, brand, model) and their actual value. Declaring an incorrect or lower value may generate fines, withholdings or sanctions from the Administration des Douanes et Accises (SPF Finances).

What happens if my package contains restricted items?

If your package contains restricted items, Belgian customs may request permits or certificates before releasing it. For example, medicines and cosmetics require authorization from the Agence Fédérale des Médicaments et des Produits de Santé (AFMPS/FAGG), while food and beverages must comply with the standards of the Agence Fédérale pour la Sécurité de la Chaîne Alimentaire (AFSCA/FAVV). If the required documentation is not provided, the package may be retained or returned.

What additional costs can I expect when sending a package to Denmark?

In addition to the shipping cost, import tariffs and Danish VAT / MOMS (25%) may apply, calculated on the total value of the merchandise (product + transport + insurance, if applicable).
If the declared value is less than 150 euros, the shipment is exempt from tariffs, but not VAT.

What documents do I need to send a package to Denmark?

You must include a commercial invoice or proof of purchase, an accurate declaration of content and value, and, in some cases, certificates or special permits issued by the competent authorities (AFSCA/FAVV, AFMPS/FAGG, BIPT/IBPT or CITES).

Can I send gifts to Denmark and how should I declare them?

Yes. Gifts can be sent by stating “gift” on the invoice and detailing their contents and actual value. If the value does not exceed 45 euros, they may be exempt from taxes. If they exceed that amount or come from outside the European Union, VAT (25%) and, in some cases, customs duties will be applied.

How to handle customs procedures in Denmark?

Customs procedures are managed by the Administration des Douanes et Accises. The recipient must present the corresponding documentation, pay taxes and comply with the necessary health or technical controls. Once the process is completed, the package will be released and delivered by bpost or the designated courier.

Does the new €3 EU tariff affect me when shipping to Denmark?

Yes, when the shipment comes from outside the European Union (for example the United States, China or the United Kingdom) and its value is equal to or less than €150. From July 1, 2026, Regulation (EU) 2026/382 replaces the former tariff exemption for low-value shipments with a fixed tariff of €3 for each type of product (tariff heading), not per package. It is a transitional measure until July 1, 2028. Your purchases within the EU destined for Denmark do not pay this tariff.
