  • Estimated Deadlines:
    • Delivery times vary depending on the carrier and the service selected.
    • On average, shipments from Europe to Costa Rica take between 5 to 10 business days.
  • Shipping Options:
    • Standard delivery: Economical but with longer delivery times.
    • Delivery with stopover: Combination of couriers with stopover at a warehouse in the network so that you save as much as possible, with longer delivery times.
    • Express delivery: More expensive but guarantees faster deliveries.
  • Shipping Insurance:
    • Basic insurance included. In case of incidents, €6.67/kg domestic and €10/kg international will be covered.
    • Optional premium insurance with full coverage starting from the declared value of the package.

Restrictions and Regulations

  • Prohibited Items: There are certain items that cannot be shipped to Costa Rica under any circumstances. These include:

    • Hazardous Materials: Explosives, flammables, poisons, dangerous chemicals.

    • Illegal Drugs and Controlled Substances: Includes narcotics, marijuana and derivatives, as well as medications without an authorized prescription.

    • Weapons and Ammunition: Including replicas, military knives and firearm parts.

    • Pornographic Material: Any content considered obscene or pornographic.

    • Protected Fauna and Flora: Live animals, plants, seeds and species in danger of extinction without official permits from the MINAE (Ministry of Environment and Energy) and/or CITES.

    Restricted Items: These items can be shipped to Costa Rica, but require special permits or must meet certain regulations:

    • Medicines: Require a medical prescription and, in some cases, an import permit issued by the Ministry of Health.

    • Food and Beverages: Are subject to health inspection; meats, dairy products and fresh products have greater restrictions.

    • Cosmetics and Hygiene Products: They must comply with local health regulations.

    • Cultural Materials: Ancient books, art, historical or archaeological documents require special authorization from the General Directorate of Customs (DGA).

    Declaration of Content and Value

    • Accurate Description: The shipper must detail the items in the package, including quantities, brand and type of product.

    • Declared Value: The actual value of the merchandise must be declared. Declaring a lower value may result in fines and withholding, while declaring a higher value may increase taxes and duties. You decide the declared value of your goods.

Customs procedures

  • Package Review: All packages entering Costa Rica are reviewed by the Directorate General of Customs (DGA) to ensure compliance with local import regulations.

    Tariffs and Taxes:

    • Small purchases usually enter with little or no customs burden, and products of U.S. origin enjoy zero tariffs thanks to the CAFTA-DR treaty.

    • For higher values, a tariff will be applied depending on the category of the product and the value of the package.

    • In all cases, VAT of 13% is applied to the CIF value. At MDE we prepare the documentation and the quote shows you the real cost before buying.

    Packages from the European Union and other countries: Costa Rica maintains trade agreements with the European Union and with the United States through the DR-CAFTA. These agreements may reduce or eliminate certain tariffs depending on the product, but the VAT of 13% always applies to the total declared value.

    Payment of Duties: The recipient is responsible for paying applicable duties and taxes. This payment can be managed through the carrier (courier) or directly with the DGA before the package is released.

    Some products require special permits:

    • Food and beverages: Health certificates from the Ministry of Health.

    • Medicines and cosmetics: Health registration issued by the Ministry of Health.

    • Electronic devices and telecommunications: Authorization of the SUTEL (Superintendency of Telecommunications).

    • Fauna and flora: Permits from MINAE (Ministry of Environment and Energy) or CITES.

    Release Procedures: Once the fees are paid and the required documentation is provided, the package will be released by the DGA and delivered to the recipient.

What items cannot be shipped to Costa Rica?

It is not permitted to send explosives, flammable materials, illegal drugs, weapons or ammunition (including replicas), pornographic material, as well as protected fauna and flora without permits from MINAE. Perishable foods, dangerous chemicals and unauthorized medications are also restricted.

Do I need to declare the contents and value of the package?

Yes. Costa Rica customs requires a clear and detailed description of each item (type, quantity, brand) along with its actual value. Declaring less can cause penalties and withholdings, while declaring more increases the amount of taxes.

What happens if my package contains restricted items?

If a package contains restricted items, customs may hold it until you present the necessary permits or, in prohibited cases, confiscate it. We will help you manage the documentation if it is possible to release the shipment.

What additional costs can I expect when sending a package to Costa Rica?

In addition to the transportation cost, shipments to Costa Rica may be subject to:

  • General Sales Tax (VAT) of 13% on the CIF value (product + transportation + insurance).
