Restrictions and Regulations

  • Prohibited Items:
There are certain items that cannot be shipped to Sweden under any circumstances. These include:

    • Hazardous Materials: Explosives, flammables, poisons and dangerous chemicals.

    • Illegal Drugs and Controlled Substances: Includes narcotics, marijuana and derivatives, as well as medications without a medical prescription or authorization from the Läkemedelsverket (Swedish Medical Products Agency).

    • Weapons and Ammunition: Including replicas, military knives, firearm parts and unauthorized personal defense devices.

    • Pornographic Material: Any content considered obscene or pornographic according to Swedish law and the regulations of the European Union.

    • Protected Fauna and Flora: Live animals, plants, seeds and endangered species without permits from the Naturvårdsverket (Swedish Environmental Protection Agency) and/or CITES.

    Restricted Items:
These items can be shipped to Sweden, but require special permits or must comply with certain regulations:

    • Medicines: Requires a valid medical prescription and, in some cases, import authorization issued by the Läkemedelsverket.

    • Food and Drinks: Are subject to sanitary and phytosanitary inspection by the Livsmedelsverket (Swedish National Food Agency) and local veterinary authorities. Products of animal origin, dairy and meat have greater restrictions.

    • Cosmetics and Hygiene Products: They must comply with Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 of the European Union and national standards supervised by the Läkemedelsverket.

    • Cultural Materials: Old books, works of art, historical or archaeological documents require authorization from the Riksantikvarieämbetet (Swedish National Heritage Council) and may be subject to special customs control.

    Declaration of Content and Value

    • Accurate Description: The sender must detail the items in the package, including quantities, brand and type of product.

    • Declared Value: The actual value of the merchandise must be declared. Declaring a lower value may result in fines, withholding or confiscation by the Tullverket (Swedish Customs Agency), while declaring a higher value may increase customs taxes or duties. You decide the declared value of your goods.

Don't be afraid, our team of experts is here to assist you at all times.

Customs procedures

  • Package Review: All packages entering Sweden are reviewed by the Tullverket (Swedish Customs Agency), in charge of guaranteeing compliance with national and European Union regulations regarding import, security and tax control.

Tariffs and Taxes: Packages with a declared value of less than 150 euros (the “de minimis” limit established by the EU) are exempt from import tariffs, but not from VAT.
All shipments from outside the European Union are subject to Swedish VAT (Moms), which is 25% for most products, although some goods such as food, books or medicines may have reduced rates of 12% or 6%.
For shipments with a value greater than 150 euros, import duties will also apply, determined according to the TARIC tariff code of the product and the value declared on the commercial invoice.

Packages from the European Union and other countries: Shipping from countries within the European Union (such as Germany, France, Spain or the Netherlands) are not subject to import duties or taxes, since Sweden is part of the European single market.
On the other hand, packages from non-EU countries (such as the United Kingdom, the United States, United States, China or Norway) are subject to VAT (Moms) and, in some cases, customs duties, depending on the type of product.
Sweden applies the trade agreements established by the European Union, which may reduce or eliminate tariffs for certain countries and categories of merchandise.

Payment of Duties: The recipient in Sweden is responsible for paying the applicable taxes and duties before the package is released. This payment can be made directly through the international courier (DHL, UPS, FedEx, PostNord) or through the electronic system of the Tullverket.

    Additional Documentation:
Some products require special permits or certificates:

    • Food and drinks: Health certificates issued by the Livsmedelsverket (Swedish National Food Agency)..

    • Medicines and cosmetics: Registration or health authorization issued by the Läkemedelsverket (Swedish Medical Products Agency).

    • Electronic devices and telecommunications: Conformity certification issued by the Post- och Telestyrelsen (PTS).

    • Fauna and flora: Permits from the Naturvårdsverket (Swedish Environmental Protection Agency) and/or CITES.

Release Procedures: Once the fees are paid and the required documentation is submitted, the Tullverket will release the package, which will be delivered to the recipient by PostNord or the corresponding international courier.

    Package Tracking:
You can track your shipment at any time using the tracking number provided by the international carrier, or through the PostNord system, or from your control panel in My European Address, once the package has entered the Swedish customs system.

Possible Delays: If the package requires additional documentation, health inspection or contains restricted items, customs procedures may cause delays in delivery. This occurs most frequently in shipments from countries outside the EU or during periods of high customs activity.

We help complete all your customs documentation to avoid possible inconveniences!

Frequently asked questions about shipping to Sweden

What items cannot be shipped to Sweden?

Items prohibited by Swedish law or European Union regulations cannot be shipped. This includes illegal drugs, explosive or flammable materials, weapons and ammunition (including replicas), pornographic materials, cash, counterfeit products, and animals or plants protected without permits from Naturvårdsverket (Swedish Environmental Protection Agency) or CITES.

Do I need to declare the contents and value of the package?

Yes. All shipments to Sweden must include an accurate description of their contents, specifying the type of product, quantity, brand and actual value. Declaring an inaccurate or incomplete value may result in withholdings or penalties from the Tullverket (Swedish Customs Agency).

What happens if my package contains restricted items?

If your package contains restricted items, Swedish customs may request additional permits or certificates before releasing it. For example, medicines and cosmetics must be approved by the Läkemedelsverket, while food and drinks require health control by the Livsmedelsverket. If the necessary documents are not presented, the package may be detained or returned to the country of origin.

What additional costs can I expect when sending a package to Sweden?

In addition to the shipping cost, import duties and Swedish VAT (Moms) may apply, which is 25% for most products. Some items, such as food or books, have reduced rates of 12% or 6%. If the value of the package is less than 150 euros, it is exempt from tariffs, but not VAT.
Shipping from countries within the European Union
do not pay tariffs or import taxes, since Sweden is part of the European single market.
On the other hand, packages from outside the EU (such as the United Kingdom, the United States, China or Norway) are subject to to the payment of VAT and customs duties, depending on the type of product. Administrative charges may also be generated for customs management by PostNord or the international courier.

How long does it take for a package to arrive in Sweden?

The average delivery time is 7 to 15 business days, depending on the country of origin and the carrier. Shipments from outside the European Union may take longer due to customs or health control.

What should I do if my package is detained at customs?

If your package is detained, the Tullverket or the courier will notify you directly. You must present the commercial invoice, identification document and any additional permits required. Once the process is completed and the taxes paid, the package will be released for delivery.

How can I track my package?

You can track your shipment using the international courier tracking number. When the package enters Sweden, you can continue tracking it through the PostNord system or from your control panel in MDE, where the customs clearance status will be updated.

What documents do I need to send a package to Sweden?

You must include a commercial invoice or proof of purchase, a declaration of content and value, and, if applicable, sanitary or technical certificates or permits issued by the competent authorities (Läkemedelsverket, Livsmedelsverket, PTS, Naturvårdsverket or CITES).

Can I send gifts to Sweden and how should I declare them?

Yes. You can send gifts by declaring “gift” and indicating their content and actual estimated value. However, if the value exceeds 45 euros or comes from outside the European Union, it may be subject to the payment of VAT or customs review.

How to handle customs procedures in Sweden?

Customs procedures are managed by the Tullverket. The recipient must pay the corresponding taxes, present the necessary documentation and comply with current safety or health regulations. Once the process is complete, the package is released and delivered to the recipient via PostNord or the designated courier.

Does the new €3 EU tariff affect me when shipping to Sweden?

Yes, when the shipment comes from outside the European Union (for example the United States, China or the United Kingdom) and its value is equal to or less than €150. From July 1, 2026, Regulation (EU) 2026/382 replaces the former tariff exemption for low-value shipments with a fixed tariff of €3 for each type of product (tariff heading), not per package. It is a transitional measure until July 1, 2028. Your purchases within the EU destined for Sweden do not pay this tariff. At MDE we prepare the customs documentation and the quote shows you the real cost before shipping, without surprises.
