New Caledonia is French territory with its own tax system: European VAT does not apply here, the TGC does, and your European purchase travels from origin without the store's VAT (it is an export). The small print matters: the commercial threshold is tiny (~€25), but EU origin enters duty-free and clothing is taxed at just 11%. Here is the breakdown.

Yes, always. The Direction régionale des douanes de Nouvelle-Calédonie clears in Nouméa and the recipient pays at the OPT-NC (post office), in branch or online, with published handling fees. Declare the real purchase value: obvious undervaluation means retention and penalties that cost more than the tax. We prepare the declaration for you from your invoice.
Natural products need SIVAP permits; medicines a prescription; radio equipment approval. The OPT-NC holds the parcel until payment or permit. If the permit never arrives, or the item is outright prohibited, it gets seized. That is why it pays to ask us BEFORE buying any regulated product: we will tell you which paper it needs and how to get it.
Purchases are taxed from a low threshold (3,001 XPF, ~€25 CIF value): TGC at 11% general (22% on certain categories) plus duties by product. Occasional gifts between individuals, by contrast, enjoy a generous allowance. Clearance handling: 1,950 XPF (shipments of 3,001-30,000 XPF) or 3,300 XPF (up to 100,000); small gifts pay no handling. Don\'t panic: most holds are about paperwork, not violations. The courier notifies you of the reason; it is almost always solved by providing the purchase invoice, the prescription or the missing permit. Write to us with your tracking number and we will manage the case with you until release.
Every shipment includes a tracking number. Follow it on the carrier\'s site or straight from your MDE dashboard, stage by stage: departure from our warehouse, transit, customs clearance and delivery in New Caledonia.
For normal purchases, just the invoice or receipt with the real value: we prepare the rest of the export paperwork and the declaration. Invoice with real value; if it is a gift between individuals, mark it clearly: it changes the tax treatment.
Yes, and here it really matters: occasional gifts between individuals enter with a generous allowance and no handling fee, while purchases are taxed from 3,001 XPF. Declare "gift" honestly (customs distinguishes real gifts from disguised purchases).
The Taxe Générale sur la Consommation replaced seven taxes in 2018. It has four rates: 3% (food, medicines), 6%, 11% (the general one, applies to clothing) and 22% (electronics, alcohol, tobacco, vehicles). On import it is calculated on the value plus duties.
It should not be: the sale from mainland France or the EU is an exempt export. But beware: if the store does not deduct its VAT, Caledonian customs will not either and you end up paying it twice. Always buy with an export invoice.
