A lift that is out of service is a problem that grows by the hour: residents who cannot get upstairs, a hotel with rooms blocked off, a hospital with an isolated floor. And very often what keeps it stopped is not the fault itself but a single part. The door operator that is no longer made in your country, the controller board the local agent takes eight weeks to bring in, the overspeed governor that only the European manufacturer sells and that \"does not ship outside the EU\". This guide is for lift engineers, installers, maintenance companies, building managers and facilities managers<\/strong> who need elevator spare parts and components for new installations or modernisations that exist in Europe, the United States or China and never make it to their country. We go through which parts are hardest to get hold of, why the factories turn you down, and how we receive them, buy them on your behalf when needed, and forward them from our ten warehouses in Europe, the United States and Asia.<\/p>\n\n

Europe: where most components come from<\/h2>\n

The lift industry is, to a large extent, European. The big brands installed around the world (Schindler, Otis, Orona, TK Elevator, Kone) originate in or have plants in Europe, and most of the components they fit, the ones that later fail, come from specialist manufacturers on the continent: Fermator<\/strong> (Catalonia), the world's largest manufacturer of automatic lift doors as a single product; Wittur<\/strong> (Germany), the leading independent maker of doors, safety components and gearless machines, and owner of Sematic<\/strong>; Dynatech<\/strong> (Zaragoza), overspeed governors, safety gears and UCM systems; Carlos Silva<\/strong> (Barcelona), controllers and control panels; Ziehl-Abegg<\/strong> (Germany), ZAdisc and ZAsyn gearless machines; Alberto Sassi<\/strong> (Italy), gearboxes and motors since 1946; Vega<\/strong> (Italy) and Schaefer<\/strong> (Germany), pushbuttons, displays and signalling; Prisma<\/strong> (Parma), automatic doors; Blain Hydraulics<\/strong> (Heilbronn), valves for hydraulic lifts; Pfeifer Drako<\/strong> (Germany), suspension ropes hanging in everything from the Eiffel Tower to the Burj Khalifa; Arkel<\/strong> (T\u00fcrkiye), controller boards and rescue devices. And then there are the large multi-brand spare parts warehouses, such as Hauer<\/strong> in Germany, with more than 15,000 references from over 50 manufacturers.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, local production in Latin America and much of the rest of the world is almost always limited to simple mechanical parts (sheaves, cars, some guide rails) while the installed base ages: the average age of lifts in the region is around 20 years according to Revista del Ascensor, which drives demand for parts for equipment the manufacturer no longer prioritises. In Argentina, the press has spent years reporting lifts out of service for want of imported parts. The result is a paradox: the part exists, it is in stock 10,000 kilometres away, and it still does not arrive.<\/p>\n\n

The United States: parts for American-code lifts<\/h2>\n

In Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, lifts built to European code (EN 81) sit alongside American-code equipment (ASME A17.1); Mexico, for instance, recognises both alongside its own NOM-053-SCFI-2009 standard. For American-code equipment and for many modernisations, the parts are in the United States: GAL Manufacturing<\/strong> (New York, since 1927), door operators, fixtures and controls; Hollister-Whitney<\/strong> (Quincy, Illinois, since 1899), traction machines and mechanical components; Magnetek<\/strong>, now part of Columbus McKinnon, lift drives such as the DSD 412 and the M1000; MCE Motion Control Engineering<\/strong> (Nidec group), a reference in non-proprietary controls for modernisation; Smartrise<\/strong> (Irving, Texas), the country's largest independent manufacturer of open-market controllers; and Adams Elevator Equipment<\/strong>, the largest wholesale distributor of lift and escalator parts in the United States, a Schindler division. The obstacle here is a different one: many American distributors only sell to customers with a US address and a US card, or quote international shipping at prohibitive prices. China: the world's factory for lifts too (and how to buy without surprises)<\/h2>\n

Around 70% of the world's lifts are manufactured in China, which is also a net exporter of equipment and components. That is where integrated controllers such as the NICE3000<\/strong> from Monarch<\/strong> (Suzhou, Inovance group) come from, one of the most widely used in the world, along with controls from STEP<\/strong> (Shanghai, since 1995), light curtains such as those from WECO<\/strong>, and a huge market of boards, encoders, fixtures, guide rails and doors compatible with Western brands, often at a fraction of the European price. There are risks worth knowing about too: minimum order quantities, quality that varies enormously between suppliers, copies that do not meet standards, and batteries or motors that travel as dangerous goods.
